Helping Control Your Child's Mealtime "Spikes"
Checking blood sugar before and after meals is an important part of maintaining good blood sugar control throughout the day. Whenever your child eats, his or her
blood sugar level goes up. In people without diabetes, the body quickly makes insulin
to control these mealtime blood sugar "spikes." But children with type 1 diabetes
need to take a rapid-acting (bolus) insulin around mealtimes, because their bodies
are no longer making insulin.
Apidra® is a rapid-acting insulin that's approved to improve
mealtime blood sugar control for children 4 years and older with type 1 diabetes.
Apidra® works like the insulin that's made in the body of someone
without diabetes. As part of an overall diabetes treatment plan, including diet,
regular blood sugar testing, and a longer-acting insulin, Apidra®
is proven effective at reducing mealtime blood sugar levels.
Apidra® provides flexible mealtime dosing
Apidra® is flexible, because it can be taken within 15 minutes before
or within 20 minutes after your child starts a meal. Apidra® allows
you the option to dose pre-meal or your child can decide how much he or she wants
to eat, then you can set the Apidra® dose.
Flexibility to be used with an insulin pen, vial and syringe, or pump
Your child can take Apidra® with an insulin pen, a vial and syringe,
or an insulin pump. Apidra® has been shown to have a low rate of
pump clogs and infusion site reactions. Your doctor can tell you if an insulin pump
is right for your child.
Taking Apidra® with the Apidra® SoloSTAR® pen can be convenient when you’re dining out or aren’t sure exactly what time or how much your kids are going to eat.
